Syed practices in the areas of casualty/tort litigation, commercial litigation, and business transactions. He is an experienced attorney with trial experience on both the criminal and civil sides, as well as transactional experience including business partnerships and commercial real estate.

Prior to joining Heyl Royster, Syed served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Peoria where he represented the City at the circuit and appellate court levels and handled all administrative proceedings. He represented the City in dozens of suits on a range of issues including the Freedom of Information Act, the Illinois Tort Immunity Act, the Administrative Review Act and § 1983 claims (along with all demolition cases and ordinance prosecutions). Apart from litigation, he advised city council members, the City Manager, upper management and other city employees on various legal matters involving City business. He helped draft ordinances, reviewed contracts and intergovernmental agreements, and was the designated FOIA officer for the City of Peoria. From 2011 to 2013, Syed served as the Assistant State’s Attorney at the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s office. While in the State’s Attorney’s Office, he successfully tried more than 20 jury trials to verdict and more than 100 bench trials.

From 2008 to 2011, Syed was in private practice, which included estate planning, mergers and acquisitions, and other business transactions. He negotiated multiple contracts related to a partner’s divestiture from a local motel franchise and assisted in the dissolution of a group of businesses valued in excess of $1.5 million. He also served as legal counsel for a $2 million land purchase and construction project.

Syed received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a J.D. from Michigan State University, where he was a member of the Labor & Employment Law Association.
