Based in Heyl Royster’s Rockford office, Patrick focuses his practice on Workers’ Compensation defense, representing employers and insurance carriers throughout northern Illinois, including Winnebago and LaSalle Counties, as well as the collar counties surrounding Cook County.
Before joining Heyl Royster, Patrick represented individuals and businesses in a broad range of civil and commercial matters. His experience includes complex civil and commercial litigation, appellate litigation, mortgage foreclosure, collections, family law, and criminal defense. His work frequently involved sophisticated legal research, analysis, and written advocacy—skills that continue to strengthen his approach to Workers’ Compensation defense.
Patrick also brings substantial courtroom experience from his years in public service. As an Assistant State’s Attorney for Winnebago County, he handled criminal matters from initial charging decisions through negotiation and trial, prosecuting cases ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies and murder. He also handled federal civil litigation involving the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and Jail, along with asset forfeiture matters.
Patrick’s public service experience extends to Wisconsin, where he served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Beloit. In that role, he advised the Police and Fire Departments and Code Enforcement and regularly appeared in court for bench trials involving municipal ordinance violations and other matters.
Patrick earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He graduated with High Honors with a Bachelor of Science in Finance before earning his J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law. During law school, he received the CALI Excellence Award for the Civil Litigation Clinic and earned Best Overall and Best Oralist honors in the Environmental Moot Court Competition.
Beyond the brief, Patrick enjoys jogging, hiking, basketball, and golf. He and his wife also enjoy taking day trips to explore cities and towns throughout the region.
