Heyl Royster recently achieved a successful trial result in a medical malpractice case in Madison County, Illinois. The case involved a plaintiff who alleged that a physician had committed medical malpractice. The trial took place from September 23 to October 1, 2024. The plaintiff claimed that after experiencing stroke-like symptoms following a visit to her chiropractor, she should have received a CT Angiogram to rule out a vertebral artery dissection. Subsequently, the patient suffered a significant basilar artery brain stem stroke, resulting in permanent disabilities.
Representing the emergency room physician, Heyl Royster's client, the legal team worked closely with a consulting neurologist to defend the case. At the time of discharge from the emergency room, the patient did not exhibit any symptoms and had clear head and neck CTs and an MRI. However, the following day, the patient experienced new, more significant symptoms, leading to hospitalization at Barnes in St. Louis, Missouri.
After approximately three hours of careful deliberation, the jury returned a verdict in favor of the emergency room physician. Richard Hunsaker and Caleb Harmon, both of whom handle malpractice cases in the firm's Edwardsville and St. Louis offices, skillfully tried the case. They received significant support from the firm's paralegal staff and leaders in its medical malpractice group, including Tyler Robinson, Renee Monfort, and Mike Denning.
Heyl Royster's approach to defending medical malpractice cases involves utilizing all available resources to secure the best possible result for its physician clients. The firm is proud of its team and pleased to have had the opportunity to help its client achieve a defense verdict.
